While food is a necessary expense, there are still many ways to cut what you spend at the grocery store. Don’t be temped by buying unhealthy cheap items though, as the health costs will end up costing you more in the long run. So stay away from prepackaged dinners full of sodium and greasy burgers / hot dogs full of saturated fat. You might actually be surprised that a diet that consists of rice, beans, fruits and vegetables is better for you, the environment and for your wallet. The following is a list of ways you can reduce your food costs without endangering your health.
Coupons
Don’t leave home without coupons. They are everywhere, you can’t miss them. They’re in the newspaper, in the junk mail you receive at home and you can find printable coupons online. A couple of bucks each weekly visit equals in over $100 in yearly savings.
Rewards
Some grocery stores have rewards programs. They will reward you with a free discount after every X dollars you spend there. They will also mail you coupons and let you know of special days to shop on, for example double points days.
Buy in bulk
Did you spot a really good deal on toilet paper? Odds are this kind of deal may only go on once or twice a year. You may not even know about it next time. So why not stock up? If it really is an amazing deal and it’s something you regularly use, pounce on it.
Eat less
Instead of eating until you are beyond full and your pants are about to explode, eat until you are no longer hungry. So eat less and save money at the same time.
